dc.description.abstract
dc.description.abstract
The modelling and design of an Model based Predictive Controller (MPC) for an industrial drying process for viscose staple fibres are presented. In this process drying air flows through a fibre web in a continuous sieve drum dryer. By slight remoistening the fibre moisture is homogenised and afterwards measured by a roboter.
A dynamic model of the Through-Air-Drying (TAD) process is presented, which consists of spatially discretised differential equations of the mass- and energy balances, as well as the relations for heat- and mass transfer. The process model is modular and scalable. The drying kinetics are separated into three different mechanisms: the drying of superficial water, the drying from capillaries, and a sorption equilibrium for the hygroscopic behaviour of the fibres. The model is able to simulate the dynamic behaviour of the dryer after changes of the incoming fibre moisture, the temperature and humidity of air, the water amount of remoistening, and the thickness of the fibre web. Stationary and dynamic validations show good accordance with measured data. Unlike PID control this MPC controller also utilises the temperature profile in the dryer as a manipulated variable. Algorithms and simulation results for Dynamic Matrix Control (DMC) and Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) are presented. More closely regarded is an MPC concept in state space formulation including constraints of controlled and manipulated variables. Particular aspects of the implementation are the active compensation for disturbances of the fibre web thickness, the definition of a setpoint for the manipulated variable water amount, the control of variance of humidity in the fibre bale, as well as an automated correction of the drift of the roboter measurement utilising the more precise bale measurement.
Results of the MPC implementation are a controller for the fibre moisture content with minimised energy consumption and an improved disturbance rejection. Furthermore, as a second controlled variable, the variance of humidity in the fibre bale is successfully reduced.
