dc.description.abstract
dc.description.abstract
Globalisation has forced the European manufacturing industry to relocate an increasing share of mass production to low-wage countries.
The remaining products with low batch sizes require a high degree of automation and flexibility. Therefore, the market demands specialized machines with a high range of variations at low costs. Low cycle times per product assembled, in particular, are a decisive competitive factor.
As a result, it is crucial that the components of a machine interwork optimally.
The company Profactor Research and Solutions GmbH offers assembly cells for precision assembling for very low batch sizes. However, in the current generation of systems, a modular, robot-supported assembly cell, communication problems had caused noticeable cycle time loss.
Therefore, this thesis provides solutions to optimise the communication processes involved in an assembly machine for cylinder locks, in order to achieve lower production cycle times.
An analysis of the communication infrastructure assesses the components involved as to their influence on production time and illustrates analytical steps to reveal weak spots by carrying out measurements. In addition, interfaces are identified and analysed according to their functions and capacities.
Comparative measurements of the single interfaces reveal replacement possibilities. Additionally, by analysing the robot controller we show the connection between interfaces used and assembling performance. These steps combined lead to an improved communication infrastructure, which also provides possibilities for a manufacturer-independent system.
At the same time, a dependence analysis is carried out for the assembling process itself. Finally, by taking into consideration reciprocal influences and the results of the measurements mentioned above, a more efficient interaction sequence is developed.
A minimized communication infrastructure in combination with parallel processes leads to a considerable reduction in communication delays and separation of independent mechanical components. Thereby, a considerably lower assembly time per product is achieved. Together with the exchangeability of components achieved by manufacturer independence, competitiveness of Profactor Research and Solutions GmbH in the flexible precision assembly sector improves considerably.
