This diploma thesis deals with the revitalization of the western waterfront of the Greek city of Thessaloniki. The topic originates from the architecture competition “ArXellence 2”, which aims to revive this old industrial zone and to create a functioning urban area that has a good infrastructure and services and opens up new business areas. Its untapped potential is to be exploited in order to strengthen the image, the quality of life and the productivity of the city.Sustainability, diversity, flexibility and dynamics are the main elements on which the project is based. They are manifested by the topographical form, which corresponds to the required urban complexity and the natural movements of society, its needs and development.Another essential part of the project is the water. Its role is fundamental to the formation and definition of the concept. Thessaloniki is a coastal city, which is why it is of greater economic and political importance. For this reason, in the project, water and geographical location are the main factors that determine the separation of structures, functions and infrastructure.Going beyond the norms of traditional architecture prevailing in the region, it becomes possible to offer maximum quality and create a landmark in Thessaloniki. Using the methods of modern architecture, a cosmopolitan suburb of the city is created. Thus, this project serves both regional and global development.“Topographic urbanism” is not just an answer to a specific architectural question, but a conceptual solution that offers complete freedom in terms of interpretation, expansion, development and use. It is a kind of mini-city within the city, which can function independently as well as contribute to the better functioning of the big city and its existing structures.
