The reception of the Baltic Sea region and its identity are changing in our present times of politic and social turmoil. It is long, rich historical heritage is rediscovered, and it’s regional and international importance reevaluated. My thesis starts with an extensive analysis of the Baltic condition (history, geography, biology etc.)The focus is then set on maritime heritage – the region is one of the biggest reservoirs of maritime archaeological artefacts such as shipwrecks. Different approaches to conservation, research and information techniques and facilities are presented. A selection of exemplary architectural and programmatic solutions is catalogued and discussed. Finally, a site for the design project "NLMC – New Leba Maritime Center"; is chosen.Situated in the city of Leba, a typical polish seaside town, the main goal of the NLMC is to offer appropriate and state of the art facilities and infrastructures for research, protection, education and information of/on Baltic maritime heritage (focus on ships) and identity on both local and inter-regional levels. Its function is to serve as both an incubator of new ideas and approaches in maritime archaeological research and an attractor right in the heart of the city of Leba, prepar-ing inhabitants and visitors for the future – by bridging history and present times.
