dc.description.abstract
Turkey is primarily dependent on foreign energy sources to provide its energy supply. To reduce this dependency and create a sustainable energy economy at the point ofenergy supply and demand, it has increased renewable energy investment sconsiderably in recent years. In this context, a rapid acceleration was achieved with the renewable energy support mechanism published in 2010, and there is a great increase in solar and wind energy investments. The principal motivation of this thesis is there are very few studies on the installation of photovoltaic systems in public buildings in Turkey. This study aim is to give insight to decision-makers in case a rooftop solar photovoltaicsystem (RSPV) is installed in the main building of the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Industry and Technology (MoIT) located in the capital city of Turkey, Ankara. Under this target, two different RSPV systems, with and without battery energy storage(BES), were designed and technical and financial analyses of these systems were carried out. According to the data obtained, it was predicted that a Li-ion BES with a maximum capacity of 100 kWh and a photovoltaic system of 99,54 kWp could be designed on the roof of the building.Considering the financial analyses results; under the current feed-in tariff (FiT) scheme, it can be claimed that the RSPV system without a battery represent a more profitable investment compared to the RPSV system combined with BES. However, for investments to be made after 01 July 2021 when the new FiT scheme will comeinto force, it can be predicted that BES combined RSPV systems aiming at self consumption are much more advantageous since the FiT prices are determined inTurkish Lira and are lower than the current electricity market prices. In addition to these issues, it is recommended government should increase the amountof additional contribution to be given if domestic equipment is utilized in the PVinstallations, provide low-interest loans from state-owned banks and reduce the rate of income tax to increase the installation of RSPV systems in public buildings.
