dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
Urban Museum Spaces are museum spaces that are connected to public spaces. As an observable phenomenon, they express a current institutional and social transformation process of museums. Here, we explore the questions of what characterizes Urban Museum Spaces and what new qualities they create. Through the empirical investigation of three case studies, Urban Museum Spaces are explored qualitatively and embedded in the discourse around the social relevance of museums as a spatial approach. Urban Museum Spaces activate and approach their museum space for publics. We commonly associate ordinary museum spaces with an aesthetic leisure experience, exhibitions, and entrance fees. In contrast, Urban Museum Spaces are publicly usable museum spaces that are initiated by museums. Seen from this perspective, museums in their entirety are an urban infrastructure that cannot be neglected and that can contribute to dealing with current transformations and crises.
