Bildmuseum Salzburg : Ein architektonischer Beitrag zur Debatte um ein österreichisches Fotomuseum

Abstract

Braucht Österreich ein Museum für Fotografie? Über diese Frage und einen möglichen Standort wird seit 2017 in politischen, kulturellen und künstlerischen Kreisen diskutiert. Dominiert wird der Diskurs vom klassischen Bild der Institution als Präsentationsplattform. Dabei bleibt die Aktualität des Mediums Bild und dessen enorme Vielfalt außer Acht. Die vorliegende Arbeit nimmt diese Debatte als Impuls, sowohl das Museum an sich und dessen gegenwärtige Rolle als auch das Medium Fotografie und seinen Bezug zum modernen musealen Ausstellungsraum zu unter-suchen. Ziel ist die Hinterfragung grundsätzlicher funktioneller Strukturen und Typologien, hinsichtlich Themen wie Durchwegung, Raumfolge und Infrastruktur und die daraus resultierende Anwendung auf ein themenspezifisches Museum für Fotografie und visuelle Erzeugnisse. Die Arbeit ist in vier Teile gegliedert: Der erste setzt sich theoretisch mit dem gegenwärtigen Museumsdiskurs auseinander, umreißt dessen Geschichte, Entwicklung sowie aktuelle Tendenzen und versucht darauf aufbauend, die erkenntnis- und erlebnisorientierten Potentiale der Institution herauszuarbeiten. Der zweite Teil soll einen Überblick über die Fotografie als Medium, ihre Bedeutung und Ausstellungsräume sowie die laufende Debatte um das Bundesfotomuseum Österreich geben. Im dritten Teil werden der Standort Mönchsberg und seine bauliche Vergangenheit analysiert. Abgeschlossen wird die Arbeit mit einem konkreten Entwurf für ein Bildmuseum in der Salzburger Innenstadt, der die in den vorherigen Kapiteln gewonnenen Erkenntnisse umsetzt.

Does Austria need a museum for photography? This question and a possible location have been discussed in political, cultural and artistic circles since 2017. So far the discussion has been dominated by the classic image of the institution as a presentation platform. This ignores the topicality of the visual medium and its enormous diversity. The present work takes this debate as an impulse to examine both the museum it-self and its current role as well as photography and its relation to the modern exhibition space. The aim is the questioning of fundamental functional structures and typologies, with regard to topics such as cir-culation, spatial sequence and infrastructure, and the resulting application to a subject-specific museum for photography and visual culture. The thesis is divided into four parts: The first addresses the contemporary museum discourse theoretically, outlines its history, development as well as current tendencies, and attempts to elaborate the epistemic and experiential potentials of the institution. The second part will provide an overview of photography as a medium, its significance and exhibition spaces as well as the ongoing debate about the Photography Museum Austria. The third part analyses the Mönchsberg and its architectural past. The work is concluded by a design for a museum of images in the city centre of Salzburg, which implements the insights gained in the previous chapters.
