Due to aesthetic and environmental advantages, the use of block pavements increased over the last years, particularly in urban areas. Considering the design of block pavements, the Austrian directive RVS 03.08.63 (FSV, 2016) contains a catalogue of standard constructions for unbound block pavements. Using this catalogue, it is not possible to consider deviating material properties or traffic loads. Therefore, a perfor-mance-related approach for unbound block pavement design in Austria is presented, using varying initial pa-rameters (material behavior, traffic, climate and structure) to determine the occurring stresses and strains with a finite element model. With these values at hand, it is possible to calculate the number of load cycles the su-perstructures can bear. In the end, the possible number of load changes must be compared to the expected ones due to the AADTT (average annual daily truck traffic). Using this method, adjustment factors between the model and the reality can be revised and more economic superstructures become possible.
