The dynamic track stabilizer (DTS) is an integral part of the track maintenance process of many railway infrastructure operators worldwide and is used for ballast compaction. Currently single sleeper push tests (SSPs) are the only way to verify the lateral track resistance and thus the compaction condition of stabilized tracks. These tests are time-consuming and only allow local statements about the state of compaction (one tie). Thus, the development of a system for continuous compaction control (CCC) with the DTS is intended. The compaction dependence of the motion behaviour of the DTS and the sleeper (which is necessary for a CCC-system) was investigated by Plasser & Theurer in cooperation with TU Wien using a novel measuring and test concept. Various compaction-dependent parameters were identified, in particular, the horizontal displacement amplitudes of the DTS and the sleeper, as well as the vertical position of the dynamic centre of rotation of the sleeper. As part of the research, a new method for calculating the transverse wave velocity of tracks based on acceleration measurements
on track was developed.
