Oehling, N. (2021).

The present work deals with the phenomena of the so-called ,Sommerfri- sche’: a summer vacation of first aristocracy and then higher and middle class which includes the development of spa and hotel complexes in the area of Austria and Germany during the outgoing 19th century. Specifically, the work deals with elements of architecture and their relation to the outside world. In Particular with threshold spaces, the border of inside and outside, of shelter and exposure. The first part of the work presents a catalog of threshold spaces of the architecture of the ,Sommerfrische’. The catalog contains elements which expand the rigid idea of a threshold into a variety of threshold spaces. The catalog covers the architectural typologies of spa and thermal baths, cold water sanitariums, light and air sanatariums, Grand hotels, country houses and classic sanatoriums. In addition to the catalog of thresholds of the ,Sommerfrische’, there are added types of thresholds of dwelling and bathing architecture throug- hout Asia.In the second part of the work, the findings of the analysis of threshold spaces are corporated into a fictional design of a new-built spa located on a site of a former cold water sanitarium of the 19th century on the outs- kirts of Munich. The concept is to revive the spirit of the ,Sommerfrische’ and to create a space, where one can stroll extensively and experience (domesticated) nature while being sheltered by an overall-extending roof. In the end a flat wooden building is created, resting on a concrete base, designed around five garden courtyards.
