Writing is one of the most important accomplishments of our civilization, because it allows the reliable transfer of knowledge from one generation to the other. Today we are writing with computer systems.
Many computer systems used, do not look like traditional desktop computer systems, mostly because of the intensive research in the areas of mobile and pervasive computers over the last decades. Therefore, traditional text entry methods are not suitable any more. This thesis addresses the issue of text entry for game consoles. Text entry in game consoles is not limited to marking the users score in a high score list.
Game consoles became a multimedia center in homes were users are connected to the internet, watch media files or exchanges messages with other users. The scientific contribution of this thesis consists of three parts:
In a longitudinal experiment the author compares the two most common text entry methods for game consoles, namely a selection keyboard with alphabetic and multi-tap layout. The results show that the selection keyboard with the alphabetic layout is faster and less error prone for novice and expert users than the selection keyboard with multi-tap layout.
Furthermore, the author developed formal models for evaluating different text entry methods utilizing a game controller as input device.
Calculating speed for the text entry methods selection keyboard, split selection keyboard, EdgeWrite and Quikwriting showed that selection based techniques are superior to keyboards.
The most important contribution of this thesis is the design and evaluation of a novel text entry method called TwoStick. The design is based on the review of previous work and several rounds of pilot testing. The performance of TwoStick was experimentally compared to a selection keyboard, which is the de facto standard of game controller text entry. Eight participants completed 20 fifteen-minute sessions with both text entry methods. Soon TwoStick outperformed the selection keyboard and was faster in the end. Qualitative results indicated that TwoStick was more fun and easier to use than the selection keyboard. The authors concluded that TwoStick is a novel text entry method, which is easy to learn for beginners and efficient for experts and an optimized text entry method text entry for game controllers.
