Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), die gesellschaftliche Verantwortung von Unternehmen, umfasst die freiwillige Übernahme von sozialer, ökologischer und ökonomischer Verantwortung und hat in den letzten Jahren wesentlich an Bedeutung gewonnen. Während solche Aktivitäten oftmals naturgemäß auf ein moralisches bzw. ethisches Verhalten reduziert und damit als Trade-off zur finanziellen Performance angesehen werden, wird sowohl in der Literatur als auch in der Praxis vermehrt ein Brückenschlag zwischen dem CSR-Konzept und Gewinnorientierung geschlagen. Bei dieser Sichtweise wird die Übernahme von gesellschaftlicher Verantwortung zum potentiellen Erfolgsfaktor, strategische CSR, welche durch die Integration der Aktivitäten in die Unternehmensstrategie gekennzeichnet ist, somit zur Quelle von Wettbewerbsvorteilen. Diese Erfolgswirkungen wurden bereits in einer Reihe von wissenschaftlichen Studien belegt, dennoch ist der Zusammenhang zwischen CSR und finanzieller Performance hinsichtlich der Korrelation und vor allem der Kausalität bei weitem noch nicht abschließend geklärt. Dieser Beziehung wird in dieser Arbeit für den österreichischen Kontext nachgegangen, wobei eine Analyse der 100 größten österreichischen Unternehmen zehn verschiedener Branchen erfolgt. Dabei werden unternehmerische Kennzahlen für verschiedene zeitliche Kontexte in Beziehung mit dem gesellschaftlichen Engagement gesetzt und deren Korrelation analysiert. Es zeigt sich, dass ein Großteil der betrachteten Kenngrößen einen signifikanten positiven Zusammenhang mit dem gesellschaftlichen Engagement aufweist, wodurch CSR als klares Erfolgsmerkmal identifizierbar ist. Für den Kausalzusammenhang lässt sich keine eindeutige Tendenz ableiten, die Zeichen deuten jedoch darauf hin, dass tatsächlich eine Synergie zwischen dem gesellschaftlichen Engagement und der Unternehmensleistung besteht.
