dc.description.abstract
The importance of the extraction of petrochemical products such as ethylene and propylene for the polymer industry continues to increase. Both the production and consumption of these compounds are showing an increasing trend as petrochemical gases are an important source of industrial chemicals and plastic products. The increased sales potential expands both the economic scope for the profitable production of these monomers and the quality requirements. Especially for the later use in polymeriza-tion process, the concentration of catalyst poisons like sulfur compounds in the propylene need to be minimized. Particularly, carbonylsulfide (COS) can lead to deactivation of the expensive catalysts of the polymer industry in even the lowest concentrations. Therefore, there is a growing interest in sulfur re-moval techniques and formation avoidance. In the industrial OMV AG plant, propylene is produced by a FCC-process and sold to Borealis AG after purification. In order to make the extraction of propylene in the FCC plant more economically attrac-tive, the idea formulated to mix the traditional feed vacuum gas oil with atmospheric residue. Before implementing this innovation, it was necessary to investigate the influence of the addition of atmos-pheric residue to VGO. In order to investigate this connection, test series with only VGO and 2.5 wt%, 5 wt% and 10 wt% admixed atmospheric residue were carried out in the FCC pilot plant at Vienna Univer-sity of Technology. For this purpose, special attention should be paid to the product gas composition and the COS content in the product gas. To analyze the COS concentration two different methods were used: a quantum cascade laser that was developed at Vienna University of Technology and an online gas chromatographic analysis at the OMV AG. In addition, a literature review was con-ducted on the causes and drivers of COS formation and possible ways of removing it discussed. On the basis of the pilot tests it could be shown that the product composition barely changes by the admixture of up to 10 wt% A-residue. The conversion remained constant to an admixture of 5 m% and only decreased by about two percentages with an admixture of 10 wt%. The gas lump, the most important product of the FCC-process, also dropped only slightly, with the propylene yield rising. In principle it can be said that the two COS measuring methods used show a strong discrepancy, where-by the quantum cascade laser measurements of Vienna University of Technology seem more plausible. Here, the COS increase is linear up to a 5 wt% admixture with A residue and one and a half times with 10 wt% admixture.
