Using a non phase stable laser the dependence of photoionization of atoms on the carrier envelope phase of few-cycle laser pulses was investigated. A fast f - 2f interferometer capable of reading the spectrum of each laser shot at a 1kHz repetition rate was constructed in order to measure the relative phase of the pulses. By combinig this value with measured photoelectron or photion signals on a shot-to-shot basis it was possible to determine the effect of the carrier envelope phase on photoionization.
A clear phase dependence was shown for the case of photoelectrons.
Single as well as double photoionization was seen to lack any such phase depedency. The few-cycle pulses used were fully characterised and different parameters, such as pulse duration and target gas were investigated. The laser system used for these experiments was upgraded to a phase stable amplifier system ensuring that it remains a state of the art laser system.
