dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
This thesis describes the technical options and associated problems of securing antique masonry. It discusses how these techniques can be combined with the theory and concept of present day preservation of ancient monuments, focusing on the relatively new technique of inserting pre-stressed aramid rods and securing them to the masonry with injected synthetic resins. With this method tensile stresses, which are not tolerated by masonry, are transferred to the tensile rods. Aramid, because of its resistance to corrosion and a relatively greater strength to weight ratio, is considered to be superior to the generally used steel. In addition to the description of the technical procedures and their variations, it discusses the chemical compounds and their potential aging processes. The thesis cites a variety of already completed projects, as well as discussing the pros and cons of this new technique in these specific application. Finally, an adhesion test of the composite, facilitated by the fact that it does not require a large anchorage area, is described, and the results are interpreted.
