dc.description.abstract
dc.description.abstract
Carbides like TaC, VC und Cr3C2 are commonly used additives, which strongly influence the grain growth and the homogeneity of the microstructure of WC-Co hardmetals. In the present work the effect of various doping carbides added individually as well as in certain combinations on both microstructure and the magnetic and physical properties of WC-10wt% Co submicron hardmetals was investigated.
In the course of the first part of the work the saturation concentration of the individual doping carbides Cr3C2, VC, TaC and Mo2C and combinations of Cr3C2 + VC, Cr3C2 + TaC, VC + TaC as well as of the combination Cr3C2 + VC + TaC at a temperature of 1400°C were analysed by high-performance electron beam microprobe analysis as a function of high and low carbon content.
Under similar conditions the influence of doping carbides on the reactivity of Co towards WC was investigated by WC/Co diffusion couples.
These results were used to prepare doped WC-10wt% Co hardmetals with high and low carbon content, respectively, at which the concentration of the dopants was closely below saturation to avoid precipitations. These specimens were sintered for different periods at 1430°C to determine the temporal activity of the various doping carbides. In addition, the effect of higher sintering temperatures and the use of various contents of recycled powder as raw material on grain growth and properties was studied.
Sample analysis contained determination of the magnetic saturation, coercivity and determination of mechanical properties like Vickers hardness and Palmqvist fracture toughness of quadratic specimens and bending strength of ground rods.
Some combinations of dopants showed simultaneously high values of bending strength and Weibull-parameter, which is measure of reliability of the material. For instance the ternary doping featured at low carbon content a bending strength of nearly 4700N/mm2 (4,7GPa) with a remarkable Weibull-parameter of 59,4.
The properties of the hardmetals were related to their mean WC-grain size which was determined by Linear Intercept method.
