dc.description.abstract
Pulsed field systems are able to generate very high magnetic fields (up to 100 T) and the pulse duration is typically between 1 and 100 ms. These high magnetic fields are necessary for fundamental research in materials science (semi-conductors, magnetic materials, superconducting materials etc). The task of this diploma thesis was to design and construct a magnetization measuring setup for low temperature measurements using a 60T magnet connected with the 8 kV condenser battery at the Institute of Solid State Physics at the Vienna University of Technology. The main part of the work was to construct and to test a coaxial pickup system. In addition a N/2-N-N/2 pickup system, which had been made in a preceding project work, was also tested and compared to the coaxial system. For the characterization of both systems the zero signal (signal without sample) was investigated with respect to magnetic field and temperature. Afterwards the sensitivity of the systems was demonstrated by measuring diamagnetism of bismuth. In this context the magnetization measurement on gadolinium (III) sufate octahydrate is in good agreement with the reference value in literature.
Furthermore it emerged that the system is capable of performing anisotropy field measurements. Finally the anisotropy field of eight substituted M - type hexaferrites was determined as a function of temperature. Due to a heat leak in the helium cryostat of the new system these measurements were done at the established magnetization measuring setup of the 2.5 kV machine.
