dc.description.abstract
dc.description.abstract
After a survey on the literature in interest rate theory and in calibration, affine one factor short rate models are considered.
Based on the paper Duffie et al. [2003] equations for an arbitrage free family of default free bond prices are deduced. Then the focus is on the shapes of yield curves within this large class of short rate models. The first main theorem shows that in any affine one factor short rate model there are only three different types of yield curves: normal, humped (endowed with a single local maximum and no minimum) and inverted. The shape of the yield curve depends on the current short rate. Explicit (in terms of the driving L´evy process) expressions for the frontiers, where the shapes change from one to the other are given. As a next aim, the limit distribution of the short rate process under the martingale measure is given. This result generalizes an old result for Ornstein Uhlenbeck processes, first given by Jurek and Vervaat [1983]. Several explicit examples are given.
The thesis concludes with a new three dimensional affine interest rate model which aimes for a fairly good yield curve calibration and realistic short rate dynamics.
