The SCSC (steel-concrete-steel-composite) plate was developed to be a low-height deck plate for trough bridge construction. Previous research has mainly focused on the fabrication of the SCSC plate and the transversal bearing effect of the plate structure. This master thesis, however, concentrates on the longitudinal bearing behaviour of the SCSC plate when used as the bottom web structure of a trough bridge. The aim of this paper is to discuss the longitudinal bearing mechanism and to compare different design variants of the sandwich plate. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop a substitute model aiming at reducing the calculation efforts to an acceptable level. For the substitute model, a unit element of the structure is selected in the transverse direction. In the longitudinal direction, the symmetry plane in the center of the field can be used. The analysis of the longitudinal bearing mechanism is executed with the finite element program ABAQUS/CAE [3]. Eight design variants are investigated, which vary in longitudinal shear connector spacing and presence of reinforcement or headed shear studs. The load is based on the dead load, the additional load and the load model 71. An important criteria for the analysis of the longitudinal load-bearing capacity is concrete failure. It is found that the concrete dowels, which are considered to be the weak point of the SCSC slab, fail in all variants (except from variant 4). Only the load level at which failure occurs differ for the variants, respectively. Especially in the case of the variants with reinforcement, failure could be significantly protracted. In addition, it is found that failure is much more consistently with these variants. In variant 4, no failure occurrs because the concrete cores are decoupled from each other. Another important parameter is the bending stiffness in the longitudinal direction. For this purpose, the bending moment curves of the different variants are evaluated at four different load levels. It is therefore possible to determine how the bending stiffness behaves with increasing concrete failure. For the unreinforced variants, only minor differences are found, since concrete failure occurs very early. For those variants with reinforcement, a continuous decrease of the bending stiffness with increasing load level can be observed. This is also the case for variant 3 with the headed shear studs. Only for variant 4 an approximately constant bending stiffness curve is obtained, since the concrete cores are decoupled from each other. In general, the best load-bearing behavior in the longitudinal direction is obtained for the variant with a longitudinal shear connector spacing of 900/100 mm and a single bar, with a diameter of 20 mm at the bottom of the holes of the dowel bars.
