A matter of time: An explorative enquiry into the attending of the material and the constitution of the ‘we’

Abstract

Vor dem Hintergrund der Klimakrise und Diskussionen rund um das Thema Nachhaltigkeit beschäftigt sich diese Arbeit mit der Frage, wie ein Teilnehmen am Materiellen in einer menschenzentrierten, “beschleunigten” Welt erfolgen kann. Sie geht von der Frage aus, wie im Kontext der Architektur vernünftig und nachhaltig gehandelt werden kann, und führt weiter in grundlegendere Fragendes Verhältnisses zwischen Mensch und Natur, des Verständnisses von Materie und des Begriffs des “Wir”.Durch die theoretische und experimentelle Auseinandersetzung mit diesen Themen entsteht eine versuchende Annäherung an die Welt. Ein Ansatz, der einen materiell-zeitlichen Blickwinkel einnimmt und von verschlungenen Beziehungen und einnehmender Immersion ausgeht. Durch die Begriffe des Materials und des Tempus wird ein Raum aufgemacht, in dem Stimmen und Diskussionen Platz finden können, in dem Fragen des “Wir”, des Materials und der Weltschaffung fortlaufend verhandelt werden können. Esist eine Frage des Teilnehmens, des miteinander Sprechens. Es geht um die Formung einer Sprache, die die Nähe und das Teil-Sein indieser Welt auszudrücken vermag.Letztlich kehrt die Arbeit zu ihrer Ausgangsfrage zurück und führt an Möglichkeiten heran, wie wir diese Webbewegung als architektonisch verstehen und so als Architekt:innen in Zeiten des Klimawandels verantwortungs bewusst handeln können. Folglich schreckt sie auch nicht vor einer Umwälzung der Praxis und einer möglichen Neuformulierung des Berufsstandes als solchem zurück.

In light of the climate crisis and discussions around the topic of sustainability, this thesis deals with the question of how to attend the material in a human-centred, ‘accelerated’ world. It starts from thequestion of how to act reasonably and sustainably within the context of architecture and branches out into more fundamental ques-tions of the relation between humans and nature, the understanding of matter, and the notion of the ‘we’.By theoretically and experimentally tackling these questions, acontingent approach towards the world is formed. An approach thattakes a material-temporal angle and begins from intricate relationsand immersion. Through the terms of the material and of the tempus, a space is created in which voices can take place, in which matters of the ‘we’, of the material, and of the making of world can becontinuously negotiated. It is a matter of how to attend and howto talk, the forming of a tentative language to be close and be of this world.Ultimately, the thesis returns to its original question and leads towards possibilities for understanding this weaving motion of matter architectonically in order to act responsibly as architects in timesof climate change. Consequently, it does not shy away from upend-ing practice and a possible reformulation of the profession as such.
