dc.description.abstract
Chemical reactions at surfaces arecentral to a wide range of applications and at the heart of heterogeneous catalysis. With surface science methods, a deeper understanding of the active site and of the reaction mechanisms is possible. In particular scanning probe techniques, in conjunction with area-averaging techniques and first-principles calculations, affords deep insights. In the talk, I will give a few selected examples including the measurement of atomic-scale properties [1], and of ‘single-atom’ catalysts[2] investigated with appropriate model systems.
