dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
A double-pointed pick made of iron from the environment of the Roman settlement at Michlhallberg (Styria) was examined, which stands in the context of a possible Roman salt mining on the south side of the Sandling near Altaussee. The iron for the double-pointed pick was made in a bloomer furnace. This type of iron production requires further processing by forging. So, both slag and a rather uneven distribution of carbon can be found in the pick. For this reason, samples were taken from several points.
There are various steel structures, consisting of hypo-, hyper- and eutectoid carbon content. From almost pure polygonal ferrite through Widmannstätt, grain boundary and columnar ferrite, pearlite with varying finess, bainite, martensite, both tetragonal and cubic, and pure cementite, long-acicular or at the grain boundaries, also occur.
The broken tip of a double-pointed pick was also examined, possibly related to the repair of a damaged pick. Regular repairs of the mining tools were necessary.
