The paradigms of Industry 4.0 are being gradually integrated into most industry sectors, providing many opportunities for improved production efficiency and product quality. However, our literature survey indicates that the potential of digital methods has not yet been fully exploited in the wood industry.
One of the most influential paradigms of Industry 4.0, the Digital Twin (DT), has shown potential in many industry applications. Digital models and simulations as part of DTs can make accurate estimations of process conditions in areas not accessible for metrology. Taking advantage of this feature can close a knowledge gap for manufacturers and researchers alike.
This paper presents the findings of a literature survey on Industry 4.0 methods in the wood-based panel industry. It also introduces a thermal model of a short cycle press for finishing wood-based panels with resinated papers. First results show great promise for accurate prediction of heat flow and temperature within the machine and within the wood-based panel itself. Thus, allowing to better understand the processes that affect product quality.
