Accurate light detection, particularly in the infrared (IR) to terahertz (THz) spectrum, is crucial in modern technology for a wide array of applications. However, due to the low-energy nature of IR/THz photons, achieving competitive sensitivity levels requires advancements in detection technology. The utilization of nanomechanical silicon nitride resonators in the construction of IR/THz detectors has been recently proposed, showing promise in attaining maximum sensitivity, determined by the photon noise. This approach, which echoes a concept proposed by Cary Instruments over 50 years ago, may bridge the existing sensitivity gap in the field.
