With their extremely high aspect ratio and low effective mass, nanowires
have demonstrated impressive temperature and mass sensitivities. An
understanding of their noise characteristics under optical displacement
detection gives us the necessary insight toward their ultimate limitations,
characterized by thermostatistical noise. This study features high aspect
ratio, untapered, gold-tipped indium phosphide nano-
wires, grown by Talbot displacement lithography facil-
itated by aerosol-deposited gold nanoparticles. (Hrach-
owina, Nano Letters. 2021) The pillars are 14 um tall
and 107 nm in diameter. The wires were measured
with a phase-locked loop in conjunction with an aval-
anche photodiode. The wires exhibit a photothermal
absorption as observed by the relative frequency shift.
For this reason, we explore the noise characteristics
of this system by means of position-dependent Allan
deviation, to help us understand the behavior of nano-
wire resonators by this method of transduction.
