Gemeindebau Chronicles: Viennese Housing Amidst the Turbulence of Austrofascism and the Nazi Regime, 1934-1945

Abstract

Diese Arbeit untersucht die komplexe Beziehung zwischen Wien und dem kommunalen Wohnbau, welcher durch den Begriff "Gemeindebau" verkörpert wird und einen integralen Bestandteil der historischen Erzählung der Stadt darstellt. Während das etablierte Verständnis darauf hindeutet, dass die Produktionvon kommunalem Wohnraum nach dem Niedergang des Roten Wiens in der Zeit zwischen 1934 und 1945 zum Stillstand kam, ist es wichtig anzumerken, dass der städtische Wohnungsbau während dieser Übergangszeit fortgesetzt wurde. Mit Fokus auf die Jahre 1934 bis 1945 zielt diese Studie darauf ab, die Formation und Transformation des kommunalen Wohnbaus der näheren Betrachtung zu unterziehen, wobei gleichzeitig Licht auf die nuancierten Dynamiken gelenkt wird, die die Herangehensweise der Stadt an den Wohnungsbau inmitten historischer und politischer Veränderungen geprägt haben.

This work delves into the intricate relationship between Vienna and municipal housing, encapsulated by the term Gemeindebau, which serves as an integral element in the city's historical narrative. While conventional understanding suggests a halt in municipal housing production following the decline of Red Vienna in the time period between 1934 and 1945, it is crucial to acknowledge the continuation of municipal housing initiatives during this transitional period. With a focus on the years 1934 to 1945, this study aims to examine closely the formation and transformation of municipal housing, simultaneously shedding light on the nuanced dynamics that have defined the city's approach to housing amidst historical and political changes.The concluding evaluation aims to draw a comparative analysis between the outcomes of this study and the achievements of municipal housing in Red Vienna.
