dc.description.abstract
A lot of chemicals are derived from fossil fuel-based resources and there is a huge interest to use more sustainable raw materials that are processed in biorefineries. This thesis aims to design a strategy for the characterization of the agricultural by-products wheat bran and potato pulp for the use in a biorefinery by using and combining known methods. Currently, they are mainly used as a low-cost animal feed. The worldwide production of wheat bran is estimated to be between 101 and 233 million tons and the credible estimations for potato pulp range between 303000 and 380000 tons. The chemical composition, added to the availability, shows the huge potential for the application of these raw materials in biorefineries. This work implemented different analytical methods for the determination of the particle size distribution, moisture, ash, starch, fat, pectin, protein, extractives, structural carbohydrates, monomeric and oligomeric sugars, ions and lignin. For wheat bran, the components with the highest share are structural carbohydrates, extractives, starch and protein, which make up more than 87 % of the dry mass. Xylose, arabinose and glucose are the three main monomers of the structural carbohydrates in wheat bran, which amount to more than 95 wt% of all structural carbohydrates. For potato pulp, the main components are structural carbohydrates, starch and extractives which cover more than 77 wt% of the mass. In contrast to wheat bran, the main monomers of the structural carbohydrates are glucose and mannose with a total share of 89 wt% in potato pulp. In general, there are two main types of components in wheat bran and potato pulp for uses in biorefineries namely carbohydrates and non-carbohydrates. Due to the high carbohydrate content, the concept of a biorefinery built on the basis of a sugar platform was suggested. Starch is easier to degrade than hemicelluloses and cellulose, which makes it useful to hydrolyze starch separately. Also, hemicelluloses are degraded into pentoses. It must be noted that there are some commercially used microorganisms that cannot metabolize pentoses. The non-carbohydrate components of wheat bran and potato pulp make up a minor amount, but they can also be processed to valuable products like ferulic acid or in the case of protein, they could be used as animal feed.
