Die Landnutzung für erneuerbare Energien führt zunehmend zu Flächenkonkurrenz zwischen Kultur-, Landschafts- und Naturräumen. Insbesondere Photovoltaik–(PV)–Anlagen weisen eine geringe flächenbezogene Leistungsdichte auf. Bis 2050 wird global eine 20-fache Energieerzeugung auf Basis von Solarenergie erwartet, was einen erheblichen zusätzlichen Flächenbedarf für PV–Anlagen bedeutet. Sowohl Steigerung des Wirkungsgrads von Solarmodulen als auch eine Flächenoptimierung im Anlagenbau können einen Beitrag leisten, den erwarteten Umweltdruck zu mindern. Diese Arbeit untersucht anhand einer Stichprobe von 91 PV–Freiflächenanlagen verschiedener europäischer Regionen den zeitlichen Verlauf von flächenbezogenen Anlagen-Parametern. Während zwischen 2006 und 2022 der spezifische Landverbrauch der installierten Leistung um 61 % und jener der erzeugten elektrischen Energie um 57 % verringert wurde, hat sich die Flächenausnutzung der installierten PV–Module im Verhältnis zur umzäunten Fläche einer konventionell montierten PV–Freiflächenanlage um lediglich 6 % verbessert. Gemäß Literatur wäre für konventionelle Montageformen eine weitere Flächeneinsparung von 20 % möglich. Zur Minimierung des Flächenverbrauchs ist es empfehlenswert, für neue PV–Freiflächenanlagen neben einem optimierten Bebauungsplan Module mit dem höchsten verfügbaren Wirkungsgrad einzusetzen. Die ökologischen Auswirkungen der Bodenbeschattung von flächensparenden Ost-West-Bauformen, Reihenverdichtung durch den Einsatz von bifazialen Modulen sowie von großflächigen Umzäunungen sollten jedoch genauer untersucht werden.
