Building extension and conversion projects can be a potentially appealing option to new construction projects in terms of life-cycle performance. Some aspects of building performance (e.g., acoustics) are sometimes disregarded in the process, while other aspects such as thermal upgrading and energy efficiency receive a lot of attention in such projects. Noise protection and speech privacy criteria play a major influence on the comfort and productivity of occupants. In this regard, the results of a recent in- depth acoustic analysis of a recently finished around 350 m2 large office extension project in Vienna, Austria, are presented in this master thesis. It has a meeting room, an open-plan office space, and some private offices. A gallery connects the individual areas to the larger open-plan office room. The study included the creation of a digital model of the office, estimation of the acoustically relevant properties of the relevant architectural elements, implementation of a measurement plan to obtain the values of key acoustic performance indicators (specifically, sound level differences between office zones, reverberation times in different office rooms/areas), evaluation of empirically assessed acoustic conditions in the office spaces, creation of acoustic simulation models, calibration of the simulation model, and a review of prospective acoustic-improvement options (e.g., partitions, sound-absorbing elements). The findings of this case study, which may be relevant to other building extension and conversion projects, indicate that the acoustic conditions in the office space are not in compliance with applicable regulations. As a result, the study looked into the usability of the previously mentioned calibrated simulation model for the virtual exploration of possible acoustic improvement solutions.
