Sailing was since ancient times the only way, besides rowing, to move on water by natural power. At the beginning of the last century the cargo function of sailing boats was substituted by engine powered boats, because of their efficiency and felxibility. As a result sailing has developed almost exclusivly in the direction of private traveling, leasure recreation and sport. One of the biggest sailing events in the world, with about 2000 sailing boats, is the Barcolana regatta, which takes place in the gulf of Trieste. It is organised by the Sailing Club ‚Societa Velica di Barcola e Gringano‘ which ist located in the Triestine suburb of Barcola. The Club has a very small property on the Barcola coastline with a club house out of dimension for world sports event, therefore most of the organization of the race is outsourced to the harbour of Triest. The task of this thesis is to develop an architecture which includes a Maritime Sailing Center and Club House of the ‚Societa Velica di Barcola e Gringano‘, which meets the requirements for the organziation of the race and which creates a new public marina and sailing harbour as a transition zone between the Barcola waterfront and the Porto Vecchio of Trieste.
