Community center in Tokyo : a multipurpose public building for Kōtō

Abstract

Tokio ist eine Stadt der Superlative und der Gegensätze. Die größte Metropolregion der Welt hat neben etlichen Hochhäusern und grellen Lichtern, ebenso eine zersiedelte, ruhige, rurale Struktur, die dem klassischen Stadtbild entgegenwirkt. Sie lebt von Tempeln, Kulturdenkmälern, grünen Parks und Natürlichkeit, ebenso wie von Geschäftsvierteln, Industrie, Handel und Höflichkeit. Tokio ist unfassbar vielseitig und genau aus diesem Grund entstand die Projektidee. Neben all dem Fortschritt den man von der „Stadt der Zukunft“ mitbekommt, ist vor allem das verzwickte Stadtgefüge interessant. Das Leben in Tokio ist teuer, was zur immer stärkeren Parzellierung von Grundstücken und kleiner werdendem Wohnraum führt. Aus diesem Grund war der Grundgedanke des Projekts simpel: einen öffentlichen Privatraum schaffen; einen Ort der die Bewohner einlädt und ihnen etwas von ihrem Stadtraum zurückgibt. Ein Ort jedoch, der in das bestehende Gefüge nicht willkürlich eingreift, sondern mit den Gegebenheiten arbeitet, die es umgibt, und mehr Raum schafft als es nimmt.

Tokyo is a city of superlatives and contrasts. The largest metropolitan region in the world has, in addition to several skyscrapers and glaring lights, a sprawling, quiet, rural structure that counteracts the classic cityscape. It thrives on temples, cultural monuments, green parks and naturalness, as well as business districts, industry, commerce and civility. Tokyo is incredibly versatile, and this is precisely why the project idea came about. In addition to all the progress one sees in the „city of the future“, the intricate urban structure is particularly interesting. Living in Tokyo is expensive, which leads to the ever-increasing parcelling out of plots of land and ever-smaller living space. For this reason, the basic idea of the project was simple: to create a public private area; a place that invites residents and gives them back something of their urban space. A building, however, that does not arbitrarily intervene in the existing structure, but works with the conditions that surround it and creates more space than it takes away.
