Elastane, commonly known as spandex, is a synthetic fibre which increases the stretchability and wear comfort of textile products. Due to its ability to stretch multiple times its origin length, it is used in a wide variety of fashion items such as sportswear, underwear and jeans. Despite all the merits in the wear phase, this polyurethane-based fibre acts as a contaminant when it comes to textile waste recycling. Fashion fabrics containing elastane were for a long time neglected for recycling because no technologies were able to process such waste streams. Motivated by the initiatives from the European Union on a transition from the polluting textile industry towards a circular economy, the separation of mixed fabrics was considered. This work introduces to the textile recycling contaminant elastane and provides fundamental technologies for future handling. A market assessment on textile fibre recycling reveals that a lot of effort is required from the European textile industry, legislatives and consumers to foster recycling, because currently not enough systems are running on commercial scale. Elastane shares in textiles are commonly detected by a standardised method with poor properties, but a faster, more reliable and more eco-friendly tool could be developed. This elastane quantification tool (EQT) is based on a polymer specific phenomenon and the tool was proven on different textile waste samples. Next to that a non-hazardous process was realised that separates elastane from polyester/elastane and polyamide/elastane textile waste in order to recover the main polymer materials. An organic solvent in the elastane separation process (ESP) dissolves elastane in only ten minutes and the solvent can be almost fully recovered through a three-step purification. It is even possible to combine this process with a biochemical method using enzymes to recycle three-material textile blends. Beyond that technologies, further research outcomes are included that support the optimisation of elastane separation.

dc.description.abstract
