Advances in the development of machine learning, neural networks and large language models have started a new cycle of innovation that will fundamentally impact how maps are created and used, and how society perceives them. To explore the potential and limits of this development, these guiding questions will be discussed: What is the potential of using AI methods in custom map creation? How do the resulting maps impact credibility and perceived usefulness? What are users’ attitudes towards AI created maps?
