Passive filters in power electronics often use in-ductances made of a winding with a ferrite core. Brute force finite element modeling of a thin wire and a small penetration depth may become rather expensive or practically impossible. Therefore, the entire winding is assumed to be decomposed into segments to allow a feasible modeling. A two-domain method is considered using an obvious basis for the electromagnetic field inside the wire segment and the finite element method outside. The skin effect and proximity effect are considered properly. A numerical example with a straight wire segment shows satisfactory results.
