The increasing relevance of sustainable resource management and its implementation in the construction industry requires consideration of Circular Economy principles in the design stage of buildings. This paper analyses building certification systems, identifying fourteen criteria and eight sub-criteria related to circularity across the six investigated systems: the reporting framework Level(s), the certification system of the German Sustainable Building Council, the Sustainable Building Rating System, the klimaaktiv building certification, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design system and the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method. The identified criteria were applied to a use case based on a real-world building. The research shows that the reuse and recyclability of buildings are already mapped in similar aspects of all certification systems. Still, the assessment methods and the scope of consideration differ significantly. The findings show high variability in the extent to which parameters are necessary to conduct the assessment and the share that circularity represents in the total evaluation.
