dc.description.abstract
The regulation of second homes (chalets) has been a central topic in spatial planning in the last decades in Austria, which has increasingly become subject of public discourse in recent years. At the same time multi-local lifestyles are increasing, which are also necessary in certain regions of Austria in order to maintain infrastructures.
The motives include education, work, leisure, relationships or a combination of these. The spatially heterogeneous distribution and development of the number of secondary residences underline the necessity to fundamentally consider the diversity of spatial conditions when dealing with multi-local lifestyles. This also influence rural/alpine areas differently (challenges and opportunities). In order to prevent or counteract negative effects and to use potentials, multi-locality should be considered in planning practice, especially in regional planning and development.
The research project “Spatial possibilities for action in the context of multi-locality and rural areas” (finished June 2023) dealt with the following research questions:
- What challenges and opportunities can be identified?
- Which solutions and strategies are currently being used?
- Which options for action can be identified for different actors at different levels?
