Bitumen is an organic material obtained from the crude oil refinement process. It is typically used as a binder in asphalt mixtures or as a sealing material in fields like the roofing industry. Bituminous materials are complex due to their chemical composition, time- and temperature- dependent viscoelastic response to loading and susceptibility to atmospheric impacts (aging). The DSR (Dynamic Shear Rheometer), introduced by the SHRP (Strategic Highway Research Program), has become a highly versatile tool with various methods to determine the mechanical behavior of bitumen. It applies stress- and strain- controlled shear loading on thin samples, operating in both static and oscillating modes while maintaining consistent temperature and frequencies. The DSR is currently used for a number of material behavior tests in the bitumen sector, including Oscillatory Methods, Multiple Stress Creep Recovery Test (MSCRT) and Shear-Relaxation Test (SRT). These methods can give information on failure modes of binders within asphalt roads at different temperatures, like low temperature cracking, fatigue failure and rutting failure. Additionally, they can indicate the aging state of the respective bitumen or investigate the elastic recovery of polymer modified binders. With the SRT the evaluation of low-temperature performance especially for identifying recycled agent (RA) performance is applicable. DSR methods offer practical experience, require small sample amounts, and provide standardized, reproducible results. This makes it an ideal method for characterizing bituminous materials in all different ageing or modification states.
