dc.description.abstract
This thesis gives an overview of the current developments in the digitalization of the agricultural sector. Stable food security, access to and availability of food are tremendously impacted by climate change, a growing world population, and geopolitical conflicts. On the one hand, the ecological footprint of current farming practices is not sustainable as the whole food system is accountable for about a third of global greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, the agricultural system does not provide adequate economic returns and livelihoods to all stakeholders, especially primary producers. Therefore, the whole agricultural sector must undergo substantial change and become more resilient to climate shocks and social or political instability. This master ́s thesis aims to determine how the digitalization of the agricultural sector, through climate-smart farming technologies, might contribute to establishing food security and minimizing the environmental impact. By elaborating on the possible opportunities and threats from the implementation of digital technologies in farming, this thesis aims to investigate whether advancements in data technology in agriculture contribute to a more sustainable future or if social, economic, and environmental injustices will be further reinforced? The thesis is based on comparing the state of the art of smart farming technologies in combination with findings from qualitative research. Hence, the author conducted semi- structured interviews with experts from relevant fields. To complement the existing literature, which mainly focuses on the technological implications of smart farming, this thesis provides a holistic point of view considering a socio-ethical and political perspective. As a result, climate-smart farming technologies can improve economic and environmental pressures in agriculture. However, long-term sustainability cannot be guaranteed as social injustices might be intensified due to immense barriers to smart farming, a digital divide between countries and types of farmers, data security issues, and a negative impact on the labor market.
