dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
If one wants to consider vacancy as a space of possibility for future developments, a closer examination of the terminology and theories from different points of view is the prerequisite. On one hand, it concerns the fundamental architectural discussion "Whatis space?", especially in the specific context and within the spatial analyses taking place in this work. On the other hand, it is the exploration of socio-cultural processes in our society that form and influence space and especially „empty space". The conclusions that follow from this are presented in theoretical and practical strategies of ecological and solidary developments, as a catalogue of possible solutions.Using a literature-based catalogue of criteria, these theoretical strategies are tested on real-life examples and the relevance of socio-spatial parameters and architecturalinterventions in the vacant existing buildings are documented. The examples from Berlin (Haus der Statistik) and Rome (Ex-Mattatoio) provide an insight into two geographically and culturally different approaches to vacancy activation. The main partconsists of a photographic documentation of the places and interviews with people who are part of them. A conceptual formulation of the resulting points of view, which appeal to the responsibility and care of architects, ultimately closes the discourse and opens up new visions of the future.
