The war that erupted on April 15, 2023, in Khartoum city and spread out to most of Sudan’s states has caused massive destruction to the already deteriorating built environment, infrastructure and economy. Millions have lost their properties and livelihoods and have been internally and externally displaced. If efforts to stop the war and restore democratic transition succeed, the greater challenge will be how to rebuild the Sudan that the December 2018 revolution heralded, with its powerful slogan “Freedom, Peace and Justice”.
In this research project we claim that this can be achieved by creating a collective vision that outlines an inspiring scenario of a hopeful future based on the principles of spatial justice, sustainability, resilience and efficacy.
The vision will lay the foundations for an inclusive and strategic developmental framework which will be instrumental in guiding the nation into stability and peace, bringing well-being to all segments of society. The primary function of this framework is to coordinate social, economic, environmental and infrastructural programs at four spatial levels: local, state, regional and national. The main aim is to provide a mechanism for translating the foundational vision of post-war Sudan into a concrete plan of action.
The research uses the structuralist method to spatial planning assessment combined to participatory action research (PAR) methods. We will use a wide range of quantitative and qualitative methods to collect data, information and knowledge. The research adopts an inclusive participatory approach, which means, in addition to experts from various fields, it will seek to engage diverse stakeholders and civil society organizations, especially youth and women, at the grassroots level. We will make creative use of digital tools not only to enable online participation, but also to help to build diverse “digital communities” capable of collaborating, learning, innovating and solving locally specific problems.
