dc.description.abstract
We numercially investigate the oscillation of air filled bubbles in water that are excited by an acoustic field. A bubble is placed at or close to a plane solid wall and exposed to a sinusoidal pressure variation. Frequencies of the acoustic field in the ultra sound range, f >= 20 kHz, and pressure amplitudes of up to 1 bar are considered. Bubble sizes range from O(10) to O(100) mum. Expansion and collapse of the bubble are investigated by solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations discretized with the finite volume method. The volume of fluid method is used to capture the
interface between liquid and gas. The model is implemented in the open source software package OpenFOAM.
Numerical results show, that the dynamics of acoustically excited bubbles is rich. Depending on the parameters, jets form by involution of the bubble wall or after liquid self-impact at the axis. During rebounds, jets away from the wall are observed.
