dc.description.abstract
Historic linear settlement structures are characterizing the outskirts of Vienna, in particular also the eastern parts of the city, which are situated left of the Danube River – with Vienna city-centre on the rivers’ right bank. Given this topographical condition the eastern area is also called Transdanubia. Due to constant threat of flooding, Transdanubia was urbanized and developed only in the 20th century, when advancements in technology and innovative strategies made the battle against inundations feasible. The urban development moved along pre-existing historic structures: such as numerous – mostly linear – settlements with aligned field-belts and the pathways, that connected the villages among them as well as with the city of Vienna and thus formed a fine-lined network around the capital.
The historic linear settlements and the development of the surrounding pathway network are morphologically analyzed in this paper. As a result, the text sheds light on the significant contribution those historic communities made to the urban growth of the Transdanubia region and clarifies the function those key structures serve in the contemporary urban fabric. Topics like structural persistence, linear settlement typologies, polycentric city developments, etc. will be addressed.
