An Overview of Biomimetic Research Topics at TU Vienna
This presentation aims to provide an overview of various topics currently pursued by the group of biomimetics at TU Vienna, highlighting the innovative approaches that draw inspiration from nature for various applications. First a general introduction into the facilities of the physics department is given. The 4 institutes are presented and their respective characteristics and main fields are outlined. Furthermore, various key topics of biomimetic research are detailed, including extensive research on diatoms and their possible application in micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) as well as the multifunctionality of nanostructured butterfly wing surfaces and their possible transfer into building facades. Finally, some further biomimetic topics are presented, evoking a general idea of how nature can inspire cutting-edge innovations and offering a foundation for further discussion about this interdisciplinary field.
