In the former industrial district of Simmering, in the south-east of Vienna, four former gas tanks from the 19th century were converted into a new district centre by four teams
from different architecture firms. In a brainstorming phase, the huge domed rooms, freed of their technical installations, were used for exhibitions, raves and even as a location for some scenes in a James Bond film. The four "gasometers" from 1899, which have been listed buildings since 1978 and were once among the largest gas production facilities in Europe, were extensively revitalised between 1999 and 2001. The architects Jean Nouvel, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Manfred Wehdorn and Wilhelm Holzbauer and their teams each redesigned one of the four cylinders and created a modern, mixed-use district in Vienna by converting these industrial monuments while retaining the old outer shell. The gigantic dimensions of the former industrial building are reflected in a diameter of around 60 metres and a height of 70 metres. In addition to 615 modern flats and an event hall with a capacity of 4,200 people, the former gas storage tanks also house a student residence, the Vienna City and Provincial Archives, and a shopping centre focusing on instruments and music in general. This was built on the ground floor of the gasometers on an area of 22,000 m². The Gasometer Simmering is easily accessible from Vienna city centre and St. Stephen's Cathedral in just 8 minutes on the U3 underground line. The gasometers are a unique and striking feature, occupying 220,000 m² and standing as an independent city within the city. The high level of identification of the approximately 1,500 residents with their living space has led to the formation of a large residential community, which exists both virtually and in reality as an association and active neighbourhood community. Numerous theses and dissertations in the fields of psychology, spatial planning, architecture and journalism have been written about this project.
