Vienna’s present municipal territory covers over 150 historic villages with medieval and early modern origin; the majority of these can be categorized as linear settlement types, mostly Straßen- or Angerdörfer. While some of these villages have been completely absorbed by the city, others are still clearly recognizable in their original form. Although the degree and type of transformation varied, their functional role within the urban texture is fairly comparable: they currently either serve as an urban sub-centre or a development axis
