This study applies Edward Abbey's quote that "growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell" to the urban development of Kosovo's cities. It investigates the theory that unrestrained urban expansion is analogous to the unchecked multiplication of cancer cells, which in turn poses serious problems for the concept of sustainability. Prishtina, Vushtrria, and Mitrovica have all seen significant urban and landscape shifts, and this similarity serves as the foundation for our examination of these changes. The research questions guiding this study are: How does the urban growth pattern in Kosovo compare to the uncontrolled expansion of cancer cells? What are the implications of examining urban development from the perspective of growth for sustainable city planning? In what ways might treatments that reduce uncontrolled growth contribute to the development of strategies for managing urban expansion in Kosovo's cities?
To explore these questions, the paper critically examines the existing literature on the parallels between uncontrolled urban growth and cancerous proliferation. Methodologically, the study employs a comparative analysis of the three cities, utilizing both quantitative data on urban expansion and qualitative interviews with local policymakers, developers, and residents. Our interdisciplinary study, which employs this unique lens, aims to offer novel insights into urban planning challenges, suggesting that strategies effective against cancer might also be applicable to managing urban growth.
