dc.description.abstract
Turbidity currents represent a distinctive type of subaqueous density current, characterized by the driving of density excess caused by suspended sediments. Turbidity currents are prevalent in a range of aquatic environments, including oceans, lakes and reservoirs, which makes study of them is a crucial area of research, with implications for hazards management, reservoir management and water quality protection. Despite the validation of their existence and the existence of simulations including laboratory and numerical experiments, direct observation of the full vertical profiles of turbidity currents in their natural environment, particularly in lakes, remains limited. This study will focus on turbidity currents in lakes, with the use of Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measurements in Lake Geneva, and assistance from additional data sources, such as river inflow data from the measuring station at Porte du Scex, lake water stratification data from SHL2 measuring station, precipitation data from radar maps, and thermistor data deployed along the underwater canyon bottom and ADCP mooring. The study will report on the triggering mechanisms, characteristics, and vertical profile structures of turbidity currents in Lake Geneva. It will also examine the differences between long-term weak turbidity currents and short-term strong ones in Lake Geneva, as well as their potential impact on the ecosystem and hazards management. Furthermore, it will provide a summary of research progress reporting the comparison between turbidity currents in lakes and oceans.
