Communal spaces in the Karl-Marx-Hof (1930-2023) : history of use and transformation

Abstract

Der Karl-Marx-Hof ist eine der bedeutendsten architektonischen und sozialen Errungenschaften des Roten Wien. Neben seiner monumentalen Gestaltung spielen die gemeinschaftlich genutzten Räume – darunter Waschküchen, Kindergärten, Bibliotheken und Höfe – eine zentrale Rollein der Sozialpolitik der Ersten Republik. Diese Diplomarbeit untersucht die Entwicklung und Transformation der Gemeinschaftsräume im Karl-Marx-Hof von seiner Fertigstellung im Jahr 1930 bis in die Gegenwart. Basierend auf Bauplänen, historischen Dokumenten, Interviews mit Bewohner:innen und Expert:innen und auch Vor-Ort-Beobachtungen wird analysiert, wie sich Nutzung und Bedeutung dieser Räume im Laufe der Zeit verändert haben. Während die ursprünglichen Konzepte darauf abzielten, soziale Infrastruktur für die Arbeiterschaft bereitzustellen, zeigt die Untersuchung, dass viele dieser Räume heute anders genutzt werden oder weitgehend aus dem kollektiven Bewusstsein verschwunden sind. Gleichzeitig fällt auf, dass die Räume (wie früher) stark von der städtischen Verwaltung gesteuert sind und die Möglichkeiten zur Selbstverwaltung und aktiven Mitgestaltung durch die Bewohner:innen stark begrenzt bleiben. Die Arbeit dokumentiert die Veränderungen systematisch und ordnet sie in einen breiteren sozialhistorischen Kontext ein. Dabei werden nicht nur die strukturellen und funktionalen Transformationen nachgezeichnet, sondern auch die gegenwärtige Nutzung evaluiert. Diese Analyse trägt dazu bei, die historische Bedeutung und heutige Relevanz kommunaler Gemeinschaftsräume besser zu verstehen. Sie zeigt auf, welche räumlichen Ressourcen noch aktiv genutzt werden, welche untergenutzt sind und welche Potenziale für eine zukünftige Wiederbelebung bestehen – insbesondere in Hinblick auf eine stärkere Einbindung der Bewohner:innen in die Nutzung und Gestaltung dieser Räume.

The Karl-Marx-Hof is one of the most important architectural and social achievements of Red Vienna. In addition to its monumental design, the communal spaces - including laundry rooms, kindergartens, libraries and courtyards - played a central role in the social policy of the First Republic. This thesis examines the development and transformation of the communal spaces in the Karl-Marx-Hof from its completion in 1930 to the present day. Based on construction plans, historical documents, interviews with residents and experts as well as on-site observations, it analyzes how the use and meaning of these spaces have changed over time. While the original concepts aimed to provide social infrastructure for theworking class, the study shows that many of these spaces are used differently today or have largely disappeared from the collective consciousness. At the same time, it is noticeable that, as in the past, the spaces are strongly controlled by the municipal administration and the opportunities for self-administration and active participation by the residents remain very limited. The work systematically documents the changes and places them in a broader socio-historical context. It not only traces the structural and functional transformations, but also evaluates the current use. This analysis contributes to a better understanding of the historicalsignificance and current relevance of communal spaces. It shows which spatial resources are still actively used, which are underused and what potential there is for future revitalization - especially with regard to greater involvement of residents in the use and design of these spaces.
