Das architektonische Exponat. Architekturausstellungen und ihre Akteur:innen

Abstract

Die aktuelle Architekturdebatte wird von vielen Themen bestimmt, die eng mit globalen sowie gesellschaftlichen Ereignissen und Herausforderungen verknüpft sind - das lässt uns die Architektur immer wieder neu bewerten. Um eine Reflexion der Vergangenheit und eine Vision für die Zukunft zu generieren, sind Architekturausstellungen mit ihren Akteur:innen eine präsente Praxis. Damit können einflussreiche Faktoren inhaltlich untersucht, analysiert oder diskutiert und damit retrospektive und zukunftsorientierte Ansätze für Architektur dargestellt werden.Die Arbeit stellt daher zwei zentrale Fragen: Wer sind die Akteur:innen dieser Ausstellungspraxis und wie arbeiten sie? Anfangs setzt sich diese mit der historischen Entwicklung und dem Fokus auf die Ursprünge von Architekturausstellungen im europäischen und nordamerikanischen Raum auseinander. Die Schnittstelle zu Kunstausstellungen wird erkannt und wichtige Höhepunkte erarbeitet, die ihre Entwicklung bis heute geprägt haben. Weiter werden Möglichkeiten, Potenziale und Herausforderungen der Ausstellung von Architektur ermittelt und der Begriff und die Tätigkeit des Kuratierens untersucht. Drei wesentliche Parameter für aktuelle Architekturausstellungen werden außerdem entwickelt: die Arbeit der Kurator:innen, die Art der Präsentation und die inhaltliche Erweiterung im Sinne der Erforschung von Inhalten.Die fünf Gespräche mit Akteur:innen der Architekturausstellungspraxis in Wien bilden eine Grundlage für die abschließende Entwicklung dreier exemplarischer Raummodelle: ausgestellter Raum, ausstellender Raum und eigener Realitätsraum. Unter Berücksichtigung des wiederkehrenden Vergleiches mit Kunstausstellungen werden damit charakteristische Attribute von Architekturausstellungen dargestellt.

The current architectural debate is defined by many topics that are closely linked to global and social events as well as new challenges - this allows the constant re-evaluation of architecture. In order to generate a reflection on the past and a vision for the future, architectural exhibitions and their players are a present practice. They can be used to examine, analyse or discuss the content of factors influencing architecture and its practice and thus present a retrospective and future-oriented approach for architecture. The work therefore poses two central questions: Who are the players in this exhibition practice and how do they work? At first, this work investigates the historical development and sets an focus on the origins of architecture ex-hibitions in Europe and North America. The intersection with art exhibitions is recognised and important highlights that have shaped their development to this day are specified. Furthermore, the possibilities, potentials and challenges of exhibiting architecture are identified and the concept and activity of curating is analysed. The work of the curators, the type of presentation and the expansion of the content in the sense of exploring the content emerge as three essential parameters for current architecture exhibitions.The five interviews with players in the architectural exhibition practice in Vienna form a base for the final development of three exemplary spatial models: exhibited space, exhibiting space and its own reality space. Taking into account the recurring comparison with art exhibitions, characteristic attributes of architectural exhibitions are thus presented.
