dc.description.abstract
Although scaffolding is a basic element of the construction process, our knowledge of ancient scaffolding systems is limited, mainly because they are temporary structures. However, thanks to the case study of the putlog holes in the Basilica of Maxentius in Rome, we now have a better understanding of this particular structure. The methodological innovation here is that the findings fully take into consideration the three-dimensionality of the wooden structure. The results allow the authors to propose a schematic reconstruction of the scaffolding used in a particular inner corner of the basilica, incorporating its key components (putlogs, ledgers, and standards).
